Guide to Renew Passport in Johor Bahru | UTC JB | Malaysia

*Updated on 10 April 2022*
Based on one of the comments below, UTC does not allow walk-in. You need to make appointment –sto.imi.gov.my .However, there is a limit of passports issued everyday.

My last renewal passport in Malaysia post was 2011 and here is the updated on with new system. So, I hope my renewal passport experience in Johor Bahru can help those who are planning to do it in Johor Bahru instead of Singapore.

Where to Renew Passport in Johor?
Here are the lists of Johor Immigration Offices for your reference

What to Bring for Renewal Passport?
With the new system, all you need to bring is:
1. I/C – Note: Your I/C must be the updated one otherwise please renew it before you can apply for renewal passport
2. Current Passport
3. Birth Certificate based on the stated requirements stated here.
4. Cash/ Credit Card

How to Renew Passport at UTC Johor Bahru?
I did my renewal passport at UTC in Johor Bahru. It is located inside Galleria at Kotaraya, Johor Bahru. A short walking distance from Johor CIQ and to give you a general view, it is consider opposite Faculty of Caffeine. The shopping mall entrance opens at 8.00am but you can see people are gathered around.
As soon as the security guard opens the door at 8am sharp, everyone dashed in and get to Level 2 of UTC office to queue for number.
First, queue to get a number. The officer will check your I/C and passport before giving out the number. You cannot get someone else to get a number for you.
Note: And for senior citizen, they will be given different queue number. There are two counters especially for senior citizen to renew their passport.
Next, wait for your turn. The officer will take photo on the spot and do the necessary form updated. So, please ensure that you are wearing dark colour to do your passport. Otherwise, they will provide you the black coat or shawl to cover your shoulder.
Then, keep your number and wait for the payment counter to call. Make your payment and the receipt will state the time of passport collection. It will be an hour after making payment. I paid RM200 for my passport renewal.
Remember to place your receipt at the counter next to it. There will be a notice box stating to place your receipt there. Please do it otherwise you will never get your name called.

The receipt with stated number and time collection of the new passport

And be sure to be back at the counter where you placed your receipt on time. The reason is because the officer will not use the number system to call. She/ He will call out name instead. So, you need to be attentive enough to hear her calling.

P/S: She/he will offer you to purchase the passport cover of RM5.00. You can opt not to purchase.

And I got my passport around 10.30am and all set to go home. It was quite fast and hassle-free. The next thing to do is to go to ICA website to transfer my re-entry permit so that I can go back Singapore with updated passport details. And you can use autogate system in Singapore directly. Alternatively, go to manual counter if you have yet to update your re-entry details.

And there is a notice stating that you can now renew your passport online. Do share if anyone did passport renewal experience through online!

Updated Information: ( 03 Aug 2019)
For those who are doing passport renewal, only physical IC and existing passport are needed. Photocopy of these documents are not required. Birth cert is not needed too.

New timing

MALAYSIA PASSPORT ONLINE RENEWAL REVIEW (Updated on 14 Oct 2019)
Update by one of the reader, Johnny, he did an online renewal recently. After submitting online, remember to print out the resit (receipt) . This is very important. The receipt will be needed by every officer involved; from processing to collection.
NOTE:
1. No electronic copies on phone allowed and the earliest collection is next day after 3:00PM.
2. You need to collect within 90 days.
3. Passport issue date is date of collection, not date of application.

If you are doing it at UTC Johor, no need to join queue to take queue number. You just go to first available processing counters (1-8) with the printed online collection receipt, mykad and passport. Photo will be retaken again on the spot.

After that, proceed straight to collection area and wait for name to be called. No need to join second queue to pay and no need to put resit in the box in the collection area.

Additional notes for online application:
*Updated 27 November 2019*
(Information shared by Saravana)
1) the photo you upload online need not to be passport photo merely, crop your selfie also can. Reason because actual photo would still be taken at the counter. The online application take just 5 mins of updating address if any changes applicable, then pay via credit card or fpx.

2) after payment if the print receipt option didn’t show up ( no the print receipt from maybank2u or etc, you do not need to produce that at the counter) fret not, reopen the application page, and go to semakan status, enter your passport/ic details and the status will show up together with the print option
3) definitely need printed copy of the JPN receipt, ic and previous passport to process. Birth cert not required.

4) the actual process is that you pay and confirm your details via online. Then, take photo, fingerprint and collect the next day. This helps you to save tons of hours because you only spend 1 hour to collect upon reaching UTC. Otherwise, if u attend personally, you need to wake up 6-7am to reach there, queue, take number, wait, counter, wait again, pay, wait again, collect. Half a day gone. But you got no choice if you need same day collection.

Hope this helps for those are planning to renew passport in Johor Bahru.

    1. Hi Chris, you can try but i think you can only get your passport the next day. It is better to go in the morning so you can get your passport within the same day.

  2. Hi. Hazel. How you go to ICA website to transfer your re-entry permit so that you can go back Singapore with updated passport details? Is it the compulsory for transfer our re-entry permit to enter Singapore by ourself? Or the officer will help us to transfer?

May I know if work permit also do the same procedure?
If not can’t enter into Singapore? Can you guide me for how to transfer our updated passport for our permit to enter Singapore?

Thank you very much for help.

    1. Hi Sin Li

You can do it on the spot from ICA website once you got your new passports. Then it will be updated.
As for the work permit procedure, I am not very sure but I think all can be done via ICA online. Very fast within mins it will be updated.

    1. Hi Hang Wei.. yes u need to update your details on MOM website if I am not mistaken.. you can check the website to double confirm

  3. Dear all, re-entry permit is only applicable to PR! WP and EP need to update on MOM!

Hi Hazel, is it really true if you updated the transfer of REP immediately after you get your passport, you can use the auto-gate on the same day ? Even on same Saturday ? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Johnny,

Are you referring to you do it online renewal when u r at Singapore, after all weekend you only go to utc Johor collect.

Just want to make sure if we renew passport online. Nt sure if it can cross custom later on.

Because I saw that is a clause in the system. Do not use online renewal when you are abroad.

      1. Yes Danny. Apply online when you are in Singapore and choose UTC Johor as collection.

Actually if you are in Singapore, just apply online and go collect at Malaysia High Commission in Jervois Singapore, save the trouble of suffering the traffic jams esp during the school holidays. But they don’t open in weekend.

        2. Think better go queue up at 7am to get queue number, because weekend is very crowded. Not sure about UTC Johor, but some other places, they have limited numbers to give out.

    1. Hi Peggy

I am not sure but usually will bring in case… just bring along if not u can check their official website.

  16. Hi Hazel, i see an update in your website that JB UTC accept walk in passport renewal, is it verified by anyone who did it personally?

    1. Hi Lee

My colleague’s husband went down to UTC office to check few days ago. The officer told him so. That’s why I share on my platform for those who need information.

If you think my website content is informative, do support my website by buying me a cup of coffee or https://paypal.me/hazeldiary?locale.x=en_GB

    2. Hi Lee,

I went in yesterday and today. no walk in. only by appointment. many were turned down to go in. Whatever the reasons, just by appointments only and they said must keep our mind open, UTC JB is not the only place that we can go if we are really urgent.

      1. Hi Winson

Thanks for sharing. How come different people gets different answer? My colleague managed to get her passport renew using walk-in though.

        1. Hi Hazel,

I’m not sure either. I went on Sat and reached around 11am. The uniformed staff guy that jaga the outside said must make appointment. I went on Sunday too to renew my driving license. Waiting outside galleria before they open at 8am. The same guy said with appointment on kiri and no appointment on right. I thought got hope. maybe after those with appointment finished already they will let us in. but then he briefed to those on the right that we all need to make appointment.
I have made an appointment on the last week of May. I still got time. My passport will expire only in Aug. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

      1. Hi Khoo, I went yesterday and today. They did not allow walk-in. Have to make appointment. The latest available date is in May and June.

I tried passport renewal online but got problem. My finger prints are either rosak or don’t have in the system as stated in the system.

The ladies who went there today also facing the similar problem. The uniformed staff that jaga the entrance told us that there is a problem in the system. Told us to make appointment from sto.imi.gov.my. if urgent can try other places too cause for utc jb the earliest is in May and June.

        Hope that helps.

      2. Hi Khoo, I just went in with my appt at 8am today ( wish I got it on 1st April)
        Sharing my experience here:
730am reach UTC and 5-10ppl queuing at the entrance
800an. Queue in front of JIM. Due to backlog from 5/5 (right after RAYA holiday), they allow only yesterday appointment/payment to go in first. The test of the queue and wait outside. People without appointment are asked to leave.
845-900: start getting queue number for those 8-9am appointment
        10+ Submission done
1030 payment done and collect the passport +\- 1 hr later.
Due to RAYA holiday and recent opening up, heard that JB UTC Is crowded comparatively to other locations. Higher chance for personnel with early appointment to collect on the same day whereas those with later timing may have to queue outside and/or collect next day.
Note: No more cash payment allowed and remember to leave your receipt in the yellow box at collection counter after payment.

    1. Hi Lee, I went there both yesterday and today. The uniformed staff told us no walk in. Only by appointment.

There is a problem in the online passport renewal system. For my case it is because of the fingerprints problem. They asked us to make appointment at sto.imi.gov.my.

The earliest appointment I can get is at the last week of May. They said can try other places too.

      1. Hello, u went to msia high comm at sg ?
they dont accept walk in ? cause i need to renew passport for my 5yo and also 71yo.
        thanks !

  17. Hi Hazel,

You wrote must go with updated IC. What do you mean by that. My current Mykad that I have does not have Touch N Go. Is that considered the old one? Or can that also be used.

    1. Hi Alicia

If your IC is still your 12 yrs old one, you need to renew it. There is a certain age that you hit and need to renew your IC. I do not remember the exact age but you can check from Malaysia website.

    1. Hi Mun Chong

I am not sure about this. Maybe the others can advise you… But i think should be able to do by now…

    2. Hi Mun Chong, did you manage to find out if walk-ins are accepted? Cos there is so much conflicting info online

      1. Hi Sharon

You need to make appointment via online. Only 60 years above can do walk-ins as of now. My parents just went and they shared with me.

        Hope this helps
