[JB TRAVEL GUIDE] How to get to Desaru from Singapore?

*Updated 30 Sept 2019*
Desaru is a beach and resort area in Kota Tinggi District, Johor, Malaysia. The beach resort is located at the south eastern tip of Johor State facing the majestic South China Sea. My parents used to bring me and my sisters to Desaru when we are young. It is just approximately 45minutes drive away from Kota Tinggi. My last visit to Desaru was 3 years back when I attended my bff’s beach wedding.
My recent short gateway trip to Desaru was to check out Sand and Sandals Resort. So I did some research on the transportation from Desaru to Singapore.

Here are 3 ways to get to Desaru from Singapore if you are preparing your trip over:
1. By Car
Driving to Desaru from Singapore takes 1 ½-2 hours time and you must drive from Woodlands Checkpoint. There are 2 routes to reach the destination. First is to drive through Kota Tinggi and you can stopover for Kiang Kee Bak Kut Teh. Or you can take the highway route (Senai-Desaru Expressway) which required paying RM9.90 ~S$3.20 toll fee. The toll fee can be paid using cash or “Touch N Go’ card.
All you need is a data roaming or purchase local data card and activate your Waze or google map. It is actually a long straight route all the way to Desaru.
This is best for group or family road trip choice.
Transportation Fee: RM200.00 ~S$66.70 onwards for round trip.

2. By Ferry

The Ferry Ticket

Take a 30minutes ferry ride from Changi Ferry Terminal, Singapore to Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal, Kota Tinggi followed by a 30-45 minutes drive to Desaru. The ferry ticket for 1 way transfer is S$26.00 and can be purchase via online. There is also an option of S$1.00 insurance fee to be included in the purchase. Although the ferry ride is able to beat the congested immigration clearance by land, you need to incur additional charges for transportation from the terminal to Desaru. You also need to reach the ferry terminal 15 minutes beforehand as well. The 30-45 minutes drive costs RM30-60 ~S$10-20 per trip. If you are staying at one of the Desaru resorts, you can check whether they provide complimentary ride.
Transportation Fee: S$52.00~RM161.20 for round ferry trip + RM30-RM40 ~S$10-13.00 for transport fee to resorts/ destination.
Here is the Ferry timing from the official website.

3. By Limo Taxi or Tour Van
If you want to have time flexibility, book Limo Taxi or Tour Van to drive you in from Singapore. The travelling time is the same by car as well. The fare starts from S$190 for 1 way transfer. You can check out this website for an option. This will be best option if you are travelling in group to share the cost. Alternatively, I would still prefer by ferry for couples.
Transportation Fee: S$380 ~RM1,178 for round trip.
Alternatively, you can book for private car transfer from Singapore to Johor Bahru via Klook from S$100 onwards.

4. By Shuttle Bus Transfers from Singapore
Alternatively, you can save cost by taking shuttle bus transfers with allocated timing and location.

Hope this comes useful for those who are planning for a short trip to Desaru.

*Update May 2022*– You can travel via Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal once they are open to public with short traveling time from Singapore.

    Hi Hazel,
The 30-45 minutes drive costs RM30-60 ~S$10-20 per trip, that you mentioned going to Desaru Coast, can I ask which transportation is this? I can’t find a cheaper means to go to Desaru Coast from Tanjung Belungkor. Hope you could help me. Thank you.

    Hi Jen

You can check with your hotel as they are able to help you contact the external driver (like grab) services. The price should be around there… or maybe RM50 for whole car service

Hi morning! How do you travel around Desaru? First did you get hotel shuttle? And do to get around Desaru? Is there Grab there? Or is it by cab? What’s the charges like? Thank you! Joy

    Hi Joy

I drove there. If you planning to take Ferry to Desaru, you need to liase with the hotel that you are staying to arrange the shuttle service for you.
I never use Grab before but i know some guest use it for grab fooddelivery. I would suggest you to book a car there. I do share the link where to book the car 🙂
