[M’SIA] STAYCATION: SYOK HOSTEL |PENANG
“Syok” is from Malay language and it means ‘good’. So when you heard people say ‘so syok’, it means ‘so good’. Ms Karen Tan is the woman behind Syok Management company. Located along Chulia street, Syok Hostel and Spices B&B started with boutique accommodation concept to accommodate different travelling styles.
SYOK Hostel shines among others with the colour theme of orange accents that located at the corner of Lebuh Chulia in Georgetown area. The travelling distance from airport to the hostel is about 30-45 minutes drive. You can take a taxi with RM44.70 fare for one way distance or take a public bus to Komtar and walk about 15 minutes to reach the destination.
With the unique hostel appearance, it attracts travelers from different part of the world. I was quite concern with the hostel stay. However, my worries and concerns gone after I stepped into the dorm. At SYOK, there are female and mixed dorms available with made to measure bed for occupants. The dorm has 6 to 8 bunk beds where individual bed has electrical socket and personal locker inside the dorm for mixed and female dorms. The hostel also cater a double room with queen size bed for those who prefer more privacy.
WI-FI services are available as well. Occupants are provided with towels and blankets upon checking in to the dorm with a miniumum deposit of RM50.This is the policy by SYOK management.
What makes the hostel even comfortable and cosy, there is air conditioner in each dorms. Definitely a cosy and affordable budget stay for a hostel stay.
Since it’s a hostel, occupants will need to share the common toilet and shower room. In Syok, there are quite a number of toilets and shower rooms to cater the facilities to the occupants. There is a separate female shower room where female occupants will not have any worries enjoying the facilities.
As you walk your way up to level 3, there is the common room where breakfast is served and occupants can mingle and bonding area. Once you step in to room, there is a huge board where people write the things they want to do before they die. The comfortable sofa and colourful beans chairs are just nice to hang around and get cosy with some books and playing musics. Since it is a budget-oriented hostel, we need to wash and clear our utensils after having our breakfast or using their utensils. I personally think it’s reasonable to do so in hostel though. Also, SYOK has night movie on every Saturday night at 9PM.
People in SYOK is also friendly and approachable. They provide guidance and maps for us when we were seeking for places to go around Georgetown area. I think this is one of the added advantage whenever you are travelling. Meeting with friendly people is all we need to make our trip smooth and enjoyable. Thanks to SYOK team for their kind and warm hospitality throughout the stay.
Overall Syok is a good place to stay if you are going with a big group of people or friends. This will be an awesome place for friends who travel together. We even heard compliments from a ‘AngMoh’ guest on the last day when we check out.
