MOVIE REVIEW: MERMAID (美人鱼) BY STEPHEN CHOW

Mermaid By Stephen Chow
My second CNY movie after Let’s Eat is the Mermaid by Stephen Chow. I watched it two days ago with my sister. Stephen Chow is known with its best action comedies of all time. Just to name few of the movies such as Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle. As for his latest Mermaid movie, he does it again with the special effects that create a fun and relaxing movie to watch. It is just perfect for this festive season.

Director : Stephen Chow
Cast: Deng Cao, Show Luo, Kitty Zhang Yu Qi, Jelly Lin

Synopsis:
The storyline is the tale of a pauper turned multi-billionaire callous playboy Xuan (Deng Chao) bid millions to buy a massive gulf at an auction for the purpose of reclaiming and turning it into a marine theme park. In order to expel and keep away all the marine life forms that inhabit the gulf, he installed the destructive sonar equipment that banishes and inflicts life-threatening injuries on sea creatures and merpeople as well.

And the colony of merpeople decided to plans a trap by sending their most beautiful mermaid Shan (Jelly Lin) to seduce and assassinate Xuan to put an end to his cruel treatment. Along the way, they fall in love and the jealousy of a ruthless female mercenary (Kitty Xhang) who has a love-hate relationship with Xuan went all the way to kill Shan and her colony.

My Review:
The movie stays true to Stephen Chow trademark style. I went google about Jelly Lin , the cast as Shan in the movie is a 19 year old Zhejiang newcomer. Although she is a newcomer, her acting skill captivated me. The other standout cast is none other than Show Luo. He has the hilarious part of all and I enjoyed watching him in his roll as the octopus man. We practically hear laughter almost every scene he appears. The teppanyaki scene is the most hilarious part of all when his face is full of expressions that made you laugh non-stop.

Also, the movie is also conveying a message to public that destruction of our environment will do harm to the earth, habitat and all the precious life. “ When there is no longer a single drop of clean water, or a breath of unpolluted air, what is the point of having all the money in the world?”.
I am truly fascinated with the talented Stephen Chow. Do catch the movie during this New Year festive film for laughter and joy!
