[BANGKOK EATS] ON LOK YUN – THE MUST-GO CLASSIC BREAKFAST IN THAILAND
*Updated Sept 2022*
On Lok Yun is famous with its traditional and classic breakfast among locals and tourists. There are many reviews and photos of the place shared on social media platform. Just like any other coffeeshop across Asia countries, On Lok Yun has been around for more than 80 years. This reminds me of the Kong Thai Lai in Penang which has 100 over years of history. All the coffee shops like this including Chin Mei Chin in Singapore has their own speciality that keeps the locals and tourists flooding in everyday.
HOW TO GET TO ON LOK YUN
You can now easily access to On Lok Yun using their MRT Blue line- Sam Yot Station. It is only 140m away from Exit 3. The shopfront is easily noticeable the moment you step out from Exit 3.
QUEUE SYSTEM
Upon arrival, please go to the front of the shop and get a queue number. You need to inform the person how many pax and he will give you the card with number. Hold on to it and wait patiently for your turn.
Here is a glimpse on the menu.
Basically we ordered almost everything in the list. The food and drinks are served in less than 10 minutes. It was indeed a quick and fast service.
Thai Milk Tea (Hot) THB 22~ S$0.88 | (Cold)THB 25 ~S$1.00
There are hot and cold version and we ordered both to try. After trying both version, we concluded that the ice thai milk tea tasted so much better. The sweetness of the drink is also slightly higher than the ones we had back in Singapore or Malaysia.
If it’s too sweet for your liking, you can have their complimentary hot tea.
Breakfast set THB75 ~S$3.00
2 eggs with bacon, ham, sausage and Chinese sausage served in a plate. It is a Thai-western style breakfast I would say.
Bread with butter and sugar THB23 ~S$0.92
It sounds rather simple but the taste is addictive.Fragrant butter spread on top of the bread and sprinkle on s
French Toast (S) THB35 ~S$1.40
It is something that we can prepare at home. The French toast served not tad oily.
This is available in size (L) THB70 ~S$2.80 as well
Egg custard bread (Kaya) THB28 ~S$1.12
The famous egg custard bread that majority approves. The bread was soft and fluffy and once you dip into the custard, it is so comforting. It can be quite addictive too. The kaya custard with evaporated milk has fine creamy texture and sweetness.
Total bill was THB 208 ~S$8.32 for two pax. Our transportation to get here is more expensive than our total bill. We came here twice because the first time was on Chinese New Year day 3. They are not open yet. For those who are planning on Chinese New Year or public holiday to visit them, do take note on the chances that they are not opening. On Lok Yun gives the nostalgic moments with comforting classic breakfast. It is a place where you see everything just go in slow paced and a simple meal to enjoy the moment.
If On Luk Yun is packed with tourists, check out Eak Teng Yu Ki– one of the oldest Thai-style cafe or classic breakfast nearby.
