[KL EATS] Restoran Koon Kee Wan Tan Mee 冠记云吞面 Famous Wanton Mee at Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur
Koon Kee 冠记 located in Petaling Street is known for its wanton mee. Online reviews said it is one of the famous wantan mee in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The traditional shop has limited seating space with only a few dining tables. The shop is easily spotted when you see an elderly uncle selling Chinese pancakes in front of their store. Koon Kee is currently run by 2nd generation owner. We had the chance to try it during our recent trip.
Our noodles were served along with chicken feet and char siew. It comes with wantan in a clear soup separately. Unlike Singapore-style wantan noodles, the noodles here are coated with dark soy sauce, soy sauce and onion oil. Texture wise is al-dente and I enjoyed the chicken feet and char siew too. Some may find the char siew thickness is slightly thicker and sweeter side. But I personally enjoyed it. It gives a good balance of sweet and savoury flavour.
They also offer dumplings ‘sui kow’ as well. My friend enjoyed the fillings mainly made up of shrimps and minced pork.
There are mixed reviews online saying Koon Kee’s wantan mee has passed their prime time and is not worth the time and money. For me, the wantan mee here is decent and pretty good. It might not be the best but it’s more of a comfort food that I will always go for.
Good news for those who have yet to try! They will be opening a stall at Eat Alley Singapore in few months’ times. Find them at Basement 2 of Orchard Gateway along with other nostalgic Kuala Lumpur Street food.
