[M’SIA EATS] Malacca Food Hopping Over the Weekend | Malaysia
Since JB café hopping has been too extreme, I went to Melaka/Malacca , Malaysia for food hopping over one of the weekend. I took a bus after work on Friday night and back to Singapore on Sunday afternoon. My hotel accommodation is kindly sponsored by Mercury Boutique Hotel and I rented a car so that I can travel within Melaka/Malacca conveniently.Within less than 48 hours, My foodie partners and I managed to explore more than 10 places. I started my Saturday morning as early as 8 am. Although it’s tiring, it was a fun and delicious weekend trip. This time round, I decided not to have satay celup and the famous chicken rice ball.
More of Malacca cafes for this time. The cafe scenes seem to start booming since 4 months ago. When we checked with the cafes, most of them mentioned that the café is only 4 months old. The cafes are mostly operated by the youngsters just like in Singapore and Johor Bahru.
So we checked the opening hours and off we started the day from 8:00am till late midnight followed by early morning rush before we took the bus back to Singapore.
Let the journey begins:

First stop is this café called Kaya-Kaya. ‘Kaya’ means ‘wealth’ in Malay. The café has a spacious indoor and outdoor seating where customers can opt for choices. The highlight of the space is their art mural wall at the outdoor area with mini landscape for nice photo-taking. The furniture’s are furnished with rattan chairs and recycled wood and metal materials.
Since we will be food hopping, we ordered a plate of E.S.P RM14.00 and 2 drinks. It is served with half-boiled egg and German sausages in slices with mayonnaise. The combination with the greens goes well especially when we poked the egg yolk and mix them together. The services here are not bad as they approached us with a smile and suggestions.

RECOMMENDED TRY: Hot Chocolate served with Chocolate Truffle RM 12.90 | Desserts
This café is not easily spotted as it is located at a quieter lane. Eat at 18 is a two-storey shop house with a boutique hotel on second level and café on the ground floor. Once you entered into the café, there is the open kitchen station on your right and limited seats on your left. Then, you will be lead to the courtyard area where the natural lightings are shine beautifully at the seating area.
We had the hot chocolate served with chocolate truffles. We were told to stir the truffles into the hot milk to get the hot chocolate. So, the richness flavours are adjustable depending on how much truffles you would like to add into your drink.
Victoria Sponge Splendor RM15.90 nicely presented with a light and buttery sponge layer with cream, marmalade and berries. Totally instagram-worthy!
The foreign staffs are friendly and approachable but there is a Chinese lady seems to be little sarcastic from the way she speaks to us. Nevertheless, it is still a good experience as the staff and the lady gave a smile before we left the café. The total spending RM45.85 (inclusive of 10% service charge for 2 cups of drink and 1 dessert )

RECOMMENDED TRY : Flavoured Coffees (RM11.00- 12.50/ per cup) | Pancakes (RM11.00 – RM15.00)
If you do not have car and going to hang around Jonker Street, this café can be included in your list. There were three outlook of the café where you can can opt for outfit shooting ( #ootd) and #photooftheday. It is totally instagram-worthy with their heritage walls and decorations. Orders and payment are made at the cashier counter. A small block cube with number will be given and the foods and drinks will be served on the table.
We were recommended to try Local Pandan Pancakes RM13.90. The pancakes are served in small size bites and made from juicy pandan leaves extract. Then, it is served with gula Melaka and coconut. The combination taste of pandan and gula Melaka will never go wrong. Total bill was RM36.90 (No Service charge and GST applicable). This includes 1 rose latte RM11.00 and iced latte RM12.00.

I had made reservations before I headed to Malacca to avoid disappointment. True enough, the restaurant is fully booked on Saturday and many walk-ins customers were disappointed. We ordered few peranakan dishes to try and even took a picture with the lady boss, Amy. She was friendly and gave us suggestions on dishes to try. For more details, you can check my full post here. Total bill was RM78.50 for 3 pax (No service charge and 6% GST charge).

I have been here 2 years back and the dessert shop sells shaved ice desserts that time. This is my second visit for the overtop milkshake. This dessert is currently trending in Singapore and this is my first try in Malaysia. We are bloated with the foods so we decided to order one to try. Oola Matcha RM18.00 inclusive of 6% GST charge. So, the total bill RM19.10. The combination of green tea powder, red bean, jasmine tea and whipped cream does the trick. I prefer this over the milkshake as this is not overpowering and I can easily finish it all by myself as compared to the ones I had back in Singapore.

RECOMMENDED TRY: Sizzling Brownie Dessert
After resting for two hours, we venture to Plat Kitchen Café for their sizzling brownie. The café has the beautiful blue theme wall colours and instagram worthy. There are indoor and outdoor seats. The staffs were friendly and approachable. We decided to try something different and ordered Sizzling Red Wine Brownies RM18.50. It was surprisingly fascinating taste and the red wine does not add on the bitterness to the brownie due to the mixture of milk in it. The brownies was fluffy and moist and blend in well with the sauces.

Located along the shop houses, the signature is attractive enough to attract attention. There is another café at level 2 which is the same building as them. We decided on Root Patisserie Café because of their signature churros. The café also offers cakes and desserts which is a nice chill-out place with friends over a tea session. The staffs are friendly and even had a short chat with us.
We ordered the Cinamon Churros RM13.00 and a pot of French Rose, Jasmine tea RM12.00. Total bill was RM25.00 (No service charge and GST applicable). Although the waiting time was almost 20 minutes, the taste of the churros was unexpectedly good. I would prefer this over the one at The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen though. You can see from the size of the churros, fatty size and not airy.

We were driving around the shop houses to see what other nice cafes to explore and Grow Cafe caught our attention. The café has the white and black theme which is best for photography. It has the minimalist interior design and best for instagrammers to take a nice shot. We ordered their hot mocha RM10.50 and hot latte RM9.50. No service charge and GST applicable. The coffee taste was overwhelming and there is no mocha sweetness traces in it.

One of the must eat list other than the satay celup and chicken rice ball is the putu piring. Since, we were driving, we parked our car at the road side and joined the queue to give a try. The price for one putu piring is RM1.10. The queue was formed the moment it opens and mostly is not locals based on their interactions within each other.
Putu Piring here are freshly made upon ordering and thus explains the queue and waiting time.It was fragrant and pillowy soft. The filling was rich with gula Melaka. You can immediately smell the fragrance of the steaming hot putu piring. The putu piring wrapped with banana leaf and with some fresh sweet grated coconut is best to consume immediately after purchase.

Price: RM5.00 (Normal) and RM6.00 (Extra filling)

If you are in Melaka, you wouldn’t want to miss out the nyonya bak chang. It has the distinctive flavour and sweet elements in it. There are many places selling this and the most online reviews are East & West Rendezvous Café which is located along Jonker Street. I bought it and try and conclusion is overrated by the hype of it. I prefer the nyonya dumpling by Michelle Soo recommended by Rebecca Saw. She did a list of Nyonya bak chang in Malacca and I decided to give a try on the one that she recommended.
You need to have a car to drive to her place to collect the dumplings as it is quite out of town. We arrived late evening to collect our order bak chang and get to see how she prepared it. She was kind enough to allow us snap away while she is preparing our order and were given a free dumpling to try on the spot. The filling was generous with pork, candied wintermelon and fragrance of the pandan. You can taste the sweet and savoury in it. If you notice, all nyonya dumplings have blue colours on the rice which are extracted from the juices of the flowers.

SIGNATURE DISH: Cheese Prawn Beehoon 芝士生虾米粉 | Fresh Milk Crab 鲜奶炒螃蟹
Queued and dine in took us more than 2 hours and the restaurant is full house all the time. Everyone is waiting patiently for the foods to be served. We were given the menu to browse through while queuing in line. Orders are taken before we are seated. However, the serving time was very slow and we finished one dish at one time and waiting for the next one to arrive. For more details, you can read my full post about it here.

It has been a while since I last visit a mamak stall. But this is well-known with its naan so here we are for the supper. This is well-known among locals, uni students and now tourists due to the online reviews I guess. The restaurant is located inside the residential area and it is best to have your own transport to drive in. We were here around 11plus at night and their tandoori were sold. So, we had the cheese naan RM3.00. They also have double cheese naan RM4.00 and triple cheese naan RM5.00. We enjoyed the cheesy taste of it while it’s still hot.Total bill was RM28.50 (No service charge and GST charges. This includes 3 drinks and Bombay Chicken)

Our last stop of the night as we drive pass the road, the bright lights from the café attracts our attention. It was past 12midnight and the café is actually closed. But the staffs were kind enough to allow us to snap some photos. The whole café is filled with bears and if you are in love with bears, you should pay a visit.

SIGNATURE: Chicken Floss Tou Sar Kok
Heong Pengs in Melaka are available at Jing Yuan Biscuit and Bakery. This is an old bakery shop that has been running their business for many years and well-known among Malaysians and Singaporeans. We drove here just to buy their chicken floss tou sar kok. The pastry is freshly made everyday and packed manually by the staffs. We were there in the morning and get to see some of the workers in action to prepare the freshly bake. The outer layer is crunchy and the inner texture of it was soft and smooth.

SIGNATURE : PORK SATAY | TRADITIONAL BREAKFAST
While everyone here for the pork satay, we are here for their traditional breakfast in the morning. I hope to try the pork satay some other day but before that their traditional breakfast is worth-mentioning too. The breads are toasted using charcoal and spread with kaya and butter. It is operated by the elders so do bear with their temper and attitude as they get grouchy early in the morning. We need to wait for them to get our orders and once the foods are served, payments are to made immediately.

SIGNATURE DESSERT: Mille Crepes
I guess everyone is familiar with this brand. No further introduction for this and we decided to have a slice of it before headed back to Singapore. Malacca Mille Crepe RM12.60 (inclusive of 6% GST) the local flavour of Malacca famous gula Melaka.
This pretty summarize the foods that I had eaten throughout the weekend. Oh boy!I am bloated by end of the trip. I would love to be back to Melaka again for another round of foodie trip.
