Apart from Singapore iconic tourist attraction places like Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Zoo and ArtScience Museum, Chinatown Heritage Centre located at 48 Pagoda Street is also one of the tourist spot to go to. I had the opportunity to visit the beautifully-restored shophouses turned centre and it was definitely a good exposure. I was quite impressed with the museum that literally transport back to 1950s.

The tour is an eye-opener as they recreated the original interiors of its shophouse tenants in the 1950s, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of Chinatown’s early residents. Visitors get to step into the small ‘eight by eight’ living quarters and fully furnished and every object tells a story, providing an insight into their struggles and sacrifices, aspirations and disappointments, love and joy. Moving on to the next floor, visitors can traces the journey of Singapore’s early pioneers who left their villages in China and made their way to Nanyang, the southern seas. It is more about the history of the streets of Chinatown and how it grows throughout the years.


Next, we headed to 3-storey shop house showcases the exciting entertainment hub in Chinatown like night markets, opera performances, street storytelling and many more.

Festive Mouse Hunt


And it’s the Year of the Rat 2020, Chinatown Heritage Centre launches the Festive Mouse Hunt as part of the Spring Festival Celebrations 2020. Visitors can seek out Chinatown’s Mice of Fortune hiding in the museum galleries, which span across three shophouses over three floors. I think this is quite an interesting interactive activity especially for the kids. Visitors will need to spot the treasure basket of ink stamps to collect.

“Painted Cheongsams with A Purpose”

A collaboration with innovative cheongsam designer Ms Audrey See of The Girl’s Kaksh and homegrown artist Glacy Soh, Chinatown Heritage Centre. They present three unique wearable art pieces of painted cheongsams for public showcase at its museum shop and to raise funds for charity and share the joy of the Lunar New Year Festival with the community.
