[JB EATS] AYAM GORENG DAPUR KAYU | JOHOR BAHRU

I spent few days in JB on the last week of December 2015 and my dad recommended me to Ayam Goreng Dapur Kayu which is a short drive from our home. “Ayam Goreng” is referring to fried chicken in Malay language. What triggers me to post about this place is that the fried chicken here are prepared traditionally with firewood. “Kayu” means wood in Malay language. The stall has been in business for 40 years and currently is taken over by the second generation. Even my parents visited this stall for their fried chicken during the earlier days.

Stall front with the Lady Boss

The stall is located at the roadside of the industrial area. If you know where is the Post Office in Johor Bahru, the stall is just by the roadside on your left once you turn right to the T-junction along Taman Tampoi Industries. It is easily noticeable with all the cars parking along the roadside. I was there around 10am and there was no crowd yet. I took the opportunity to request to take photo of their kitchen. The lady boss was kind enough to allow me to take some photos.

View from the roadside

She shared that the chickens are marinated in the morning before they started to fry them. As you can see from the photo, there are stacks of firewood at the right side. The moment I stepped into the kitchen, I can smell the fragrance of fried chicken.
Orders are made at the counter where the fried chickens are displayed at the counter along with the sauces. Customers are freely to choose the fried chicken and the staff will get them chop into smaller pieces. It is then served with white rice, asam pedas sauce, curry sauce, sambal tumis and acar to complete a set. The whole set costs RM7.00 ~ [S$2.34].
I packed back 2 pieces of fried chicken to try which costs RM3.50 each ~ [S$1.19] along with the sauces. True enough the chicken was fragrance and crispy on the outer layer of the skin. I enjoyed it with the samble tumis which is not too spicy for me. The meat remains juicy and tender even after I had it after an hour.It would be best if it is still pipping hot though.
If you wish to give a try, I would advise you to go before 1pm to avoid disappointment. The lunch crowd started from 12pm onwards. Since industrial area has limited food places, Ayam Goreng Dapur Kayu is one of the favourite lunch place for those who are working nearby.
