[HK EATS] Gudetama [ ぐでたま] Theme-Restaurant DIM SUM ICON | Hong Kong
Gudetama food craze is happening in Hong Kong! It was not a planned dinner but somehow rather we were nearby the location and end up at Dim Sum Icon. If you are not aware about it, Gudetama is known with the lazy looking yolk and it is Japanese-origin anime character that flooded with social media feeds recently. Dim Sum Icon has collaborated with Gudetama to launch the food items on the restaurant’s menu.
As expected, there were queue at the restaurant. We took a queue number and end up waiting for 45 minutes for the dinner. Finally we secured a table for three and the order sheet and menu was placed on the table for ordering. Once order sheet is handed over to the service staff, we are all ready for the cute Gudetama.
Signature dish and must order when you are here. Instagram-worthy photo when you burst the seams of the bun, the flowing yolk that looks like gudetama is ‘vomiting’. The creamy yellow liu sha bun here is worthy try with the added advantage of the cuteness appearance.
Gudetama Prawn Dumplings HKD49
Egg yolk was used to get the colour of the gudetama for the translucent hargao skin and once you take the first bite, you can taste the prawn meat instantly.
Deep Fried Minced Chicken Dumplings HKD29
Nicely shaped into 3 carrots and we were like a happy kid looking at it once it was served on the table. The minced chicken was nicely wrapped in and the thickness of the skin was just fine to taste the filling.
Steamed Rice with Chicken and Cordyceps Flowers HKD42
Nicely presented with the filling portion.
Squid Cakes with Apricot and Cheese HKD39
First time trying squid cakes and I enjoyed it. The crunch with almond overcoat and the melted cheese gives a punch on the overall taste. Indeed a creative fusion dish worth trying other than gudetama dish.
This dish is accompanied by a special gudetama sunny side up egg with mixture of healthy brown rice in it. Surprisingly was quite decent and there is a wok hei taste in it. Although the bowl looks small from the picture, but trust me the portion can fill your stomach well.
Services here were standard where the service staff will take your order and refill your tea whenever you required. Overall was a pleasant dining experience with reasonable pricing. This themed restaurant gave me a new perspective on food quality as I always have the impression that most of the theme-restaurants foods are nice to see but not the taste wise. Dim Sum Icon has proven me wrong and I wouldn’t mind visiting them again. But of course depends on the waiting time too. Sometimes, it is better to have no expectation and leaving with a satisfaction once you step out of the restaurant. Don’t you think so?
