[JAPAN EATS] ASAKUSA GYUKATSU – 5 WAYS TO ENJOY THE BEEF CUTLET IN TOKYO
It was a wonderful foodie trip to Tokyo, Japan last December. We were there for a week with no pre-planned itinerary. We did have lotsa fun exploring the places. One of my favourite food places is Gyukatsu from Gyukatsu Motomura. This is highly recommended Japanese food to eat in Tokyo.
Gyukatsu is a deep-fried breaded beef cutlet which shares the similarity with Tonkatsu. It was my first time trying it and I was not aware that Singapore has it too. We queued for an hour plus at the Asakusa outlet. The queue is never ending and the space to queue is very narrow as the restaurant is located at the basement.
Here is how their menu looks like:
It is pretty straightforward with the description and price. There is an option to add grated yam with additional charges. Diners can get another bowl of rice for free though.
We also learnt that there are 5 ways to enjoy Gyukatsu.
1. Dip it with wasabi and soy sauce
2. Dip it with soy sauce
3. Dip it with horseradish and onion sauce
4. Season with rock salt
5. Sizzle it for a few seconds on the mini stone grill for your preferred doneness.
Gyukatsu comes in set meal with cabbage, potato salad, pickles, barley rice and miso soup. The rice here is fragrant, fluffy and tasty. I wish I can have second bowl of it but it is way too much for me. The beef cutlet is succulent in taste and I can imagine the flavours while typing now. I tried the 5 ways to enjoy the beef cutlet and my favourite is to have it with rock salt and soy sauce.
However searing the meat on the stone-grilled is rather interesting. The crusted skin on the outer layer and tender in the inside is simply sinful and satisfying!
As we sat down and enjoy the meal, we can’t help to notice that the moment the locals dining culture. The moment they sat down for the meal, they quietly enjoy their meal and only speak to each other once the meal is over. Once we are done with our meal, we approached the counter to pay. We left with a happy note.
