I went to purchase the cheese tarts from Icing Room at NEX, Serangoon after work yesterday. It was around 6.30pm when I arrived and I saw one of the staffs is providing the samples for customers to try. There were two large trays filled with the original and salted egg yolk cheese tarts.
I purchased 2 originals and 2 salted egg yolk cheese tarts S$6.00 ( Buy 3 Get 1 Free for promotion). It was packed in a white box to takeaway. I was told that this batch was produced in the afternoon in Icing Room, NEX instead of from their central kitchen. Thus, customers can expect fresh batches coming from the hot oven.
There are three ways to enjoy the tarts and I tried it in warm. I personally think that hot and warm ways will taste similar. Both tarts are soft as tofu texture and the cheese was not overwhelming. I enjoyed the buttery crust from the tarts. The original cheese tart was crunchy, light and creamy texture.
As for the salted egg cheese tart, I tried to capture it’s flowing but somehow it does not flow when I cut into half. Sad to be honest because I was expecting it to flow but I guess it does not flow because it is not hot enough. The salted egg yolk taste was not strong enough though but the combination with the cheese seems to work beautifully. I would prefer to enjoy the salted egg lava croissant rather than the tart version. But my sister prefer this as she shared that it has a well-balanced combination and savoury taste. She even asked me to buy more if I am going Icing Room again.
So, it is up to individual taste bud to determine your favourite. Personally for me, I prefer the salted egg yolk cheese tarts over the original tart because I am not a cheesy person. But this does not mean that the original taste was not good. Taste is subjective and based on individual preference.
