JB EATS- Chew Seafood Garden Restaurant 老洲海鲜粥 (FormeRly Matang Seafood View) – Seafood Porridge and More Opposite KSL Mall in Johor Bahru
Chew Seafood Garden Restaurant, formerly known as Matang Seafood View located opposite KSL Mall in Johor Bahru offers fresh seafood porridge and other seafood dishes with affordable pricing. The owner, Chew is one of the brother of Matang Seafood View renamed the restaurant to Chew Seafood Garden Restaurant now. He gets his seafood supplies from Kuala Sepetang, and it is family business. They will arrange the fresh wild caught seafood from Perak to Johor Bahru every Friday evening.
I met up with Tony (Johorkaki) and my secondary school friend for a meal here recently. I have been to Matang Seafood View located in Taman Mount Austin few years back and glad to be back here to Chew to try their version. The recipes are the same except that Chew offers variety of seafood dishes.
Here are the dishes we tried over the lunch the other day.
Fried “Dragon Tongue” fish RM15.00+ per piece ~S$5.00
Dragon Tongue fish is an interesting sole fish name nicely pan-fried. The fish meat tasted tender and delicate.
Fried 5-spice meat rolls RM12.00+
Deep-fried lobak filled with chopped chestnuts and minced pork best to dip with their chilli sauce.
Signature Seafood Porridge
Next, the signature seafood porridge served in a large claypot with choice of seafood. Our version includes the crab, squids, fish balls, prawns, lala clams, minced pork and porridge. The porridge had a rich broth with briny seafood flavours and coupled with the natural sweetness from the seafood ingredients. This is best to share with a group of friends.
Ikan bakar / Stingray
Grilled stingray or we called it ikan pari bakar marinated with blended chilli paste and herbs before being wrapped in banana leaves. It is grilled to perfection and shiok to eat with a spicy and tangy flavour. The sambal chilli sauce here tasted sweet and not very spicy at all and of course the stingray flesh was amazingly delicious. I would highly recommend you to order this when you are here.
Sambal Petai and Sotong
We can’t get enough of the sambal chilli and ordered small portion of sotong/ squid and petai to try!
Fried Grouperfish Head
Interesting dish I would as they fried the grouperfish head before cooking it with dark sauce. It gives a taste of sweetness and savoury elements to it. Not a fan of this though.
Steamed Lobsters
And we also had steamed lobsters priced at RM180.00+~S$60.00+ for two piece and approximately 1kg. Totally loving the sweetness from the flesh and it pairs well with the fried and raw garlic and savoury sauce. The price of the seafood here is based on the seasonal pricing.
Coconut Pudding RM9.90~S$3.30
Lastly, coconut pudding for dessert from my friend’s coconut supply business. He is starting to supply this to Chew Seafood and you can enjoy it after the seafood feast.
NOTE: And if you really enjoy the food here and planning to return any soon, keep your receipt and show them to get 15% off your next bill.
