Uptown Nasi Lemak at Telok Ayer Coffeeshop is opened by two Malaysians who grew up in Damansara Uptown, Malaysia. Online reviews mentioned that they are unable to find the same taste of Malaysian nasi lemak in Singapore. Thus, they decided to recreate the taste and dish here. The stall has opened for almost 2 years and finally made my visit here.


Since it’s a coffeeshop, you need to order, make payment and collect from the stall as usual. My sister and I decided to order their signature Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah S$7.50 (Whole Leg) and Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang S$8.50.





Let’s start with the signature dish. Beautifully plated and the fragrant smell of coconut milk rice and spiced fried chicken marinated in various spices. We could feel the similarity from the presentation. And true enough, it is a taste of Malaysia nasi lemak indeed! The juicy chicken wrapped in crispy spiced skin and the spices are on point. The sides including the acar, sambal and crispy ikan bilis, peanuts, cucumber slices and half an egg complete the meal. Some may find the flavours are too strong, but this is just like Malaysian-style nasi lemak.


Moving on is the Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang. Same sides as the signature version but this is the tender beef rendang packed with flavours. Those who enjoy beef rendang, can give it a try.

My friend also recommended Sambal Sotong but we were too full to try. Perhaps next round then.

I do recommended to visit the stall for Malaysia style nasi lemak if you craving for one. This is certainly different from Singaporean version. Strong and umami flavours that gives you a sense of home and familiarity I guess. At least to my sister and myself. We missed our home and our parents in Malaysia.
