[JB EATS] Bangkok-style Coconut Ice-Cream | Sangkaya Mount Austin,JB
[Updated on 11 January 2016]
Sangkaya 2nd Outlet in Johor Bahru is NOW opened at Jalan Dhoby. Those who are coming from Singapore are able to have a taste of this brand by FOOT.
In Singapore, we have quite a number of Bangkok-style coconut ice-cream opening this year. But if you are residing in Malaysia, Sangkaya is the one that the locals are raving about recently. The brand itself started off at Kuala Lumpur (KL) selling coconut ice-cream based desserts is founded by Malaysian. It started with a small stall selling coconut ice-cream at Jalan Alor Bukit Bintang and expand with 31 and counting physical stores across Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.
Finally, it expanded their first store in Mount Austin, Johor Bahru end October last month. So, I finally visited the place last Sunday (8/11/2015) with other foodies. The outlet has a spacious indoor and outdoor seating for customers to enjoy. Orders and payments are made at the counter.
Signature – RM10.50
We ordered the Signature that comes with 4 small scoops of ice-cream on the coconut shell with 3 choices of toppings. Toppings were available at the counter for self-service. Toppings include sweet corn, coconut flakes, roasted peanuts, cereal, corn flakes, chocolate sauce and kidney beans. We opt for mix flavours (Coconut and Chai Yen / Thai Milk Tea) and toppings with sweet corns, kidney beans and coconut flakes.
The coconut ice-cream was smooth, creamy and refreshing while the Thai Milk Tea flavour was not too sweet. I like the combination taste especially when I paired them with the toppings. Lastly, the coconut flesh at the side gives a good end for the dessert. Not cheap dessert in terms of Ringgit value with the size of a hand palm dessert.
Sangkaya premium coconut ice-cream with strips of sweet coconut flesh, roasted peanuts and toasted coconut flakes. This combination defines the local taste with Gula Melaka sweetness in it. It was new displaying at their banner so we decided to give a try. For the price to pay, I would expect a bigger size glass of it.
Bottled R.O. Water (RM1.50) ,100% all-natural coconut water (RM4.90), ‘real’ coconut shake (RM8.90), coconut ice-cream/ Thai Iced tea ice-cream in cup (RM6.90) and cone (RM2.90) are available. Additional RM0.50 extra charge for the toppings are available as well.
I would foresee this trend is picking up and there might be possibilities of new shops opening the similar concept to get a slice of cake on this business. No much of services to comment as it is just basically order, pay and grab it and go. I would think it is quite hefty price for a small portion of it and it’s nice to indulge into it once a while if you are spending in RM. But for SGD currency, definitely worth the value though. So, give a try when you are nearby.
