[SG EATS] The Blue Ginger – Peranakan Restaurant @ Great World City

Great World City has revamped and there are new F&B tenants to check out when you visit the mall. One of them is The Blue Ginger, one of Singapore’s most established Peranakan brands launches its second outlet here. It is 25 years after its flagship opened in Tanjong Pagar.
The Blue Ginger at Great World City presents a classy and modern space that exudes a similarly welcoming vibe, and boasts a menu of Peranakan dishes prepared from family recipes. The Peranakan dishes are prepared by a team of skilled chefs with recipes from one of the founding partner’s mother, Mrs Vivian Lian.

We started with their Starters, which is also new to the menu at Great World City. There are the Kerabu Kacang Botol S$11.50 and Kerabu Timun S$8.50. The former showcases winged beans, which are blanched and tossed with dried shrimps, shallots, fragrant toasted grated coconut and a zingy dressing comprising ground fresh chillies and lime juice. As for the Kerabu Timun, the dish pairs chicken gizzards with cucumbers and tomatoes in belachan chilli paste. If only, the belachan chilli paste seeps through the crunchy cucumber for stronger taste in flavour.

Next, we moved on to the mains.
Beef Rendang S$20.00
Look out for the tender chunks of shin meat in a thick curry with aromatic rempah that goes very well with a plate of rice. Shiok!

Ayam Panggang ‘Blue Ginger’ S$16.00
Grilled boneless chicken thigh cloaked in flavourful gravy. The boneless chicken thigh is first marinated with a spice mix including turmeric and served with a delicious sauce.

Terong Goreng Cili S$13.00
The deep-fried eggplant batonnets crowned with a homemda fresh chilli paste and drizzle of sweet dark soy sauce. I was warned about the spiciness but surprisingly, it is still manageable for someone like me who doesn’t take spicy food.

Pork Ribs Assam S$16.00
The dish is The Blue Ginger’s rendition of the classic Peranakan delicacy, Babi Assam. Instead of using pork belly, they use pork rib that is rendered after hours of braising. This is definitely less fatty and something different from the traditional way of presenting the dish.

Sotong Keluak S$22.00
This is definitely the surprise highlight for the night. We usually have buah keluak chicken dish but this is fresh squid with rich and earthy buah keluak. This is either u love it or u leaves it as buah keluak has a complex or we called it unique flavour. But with the fresh squid, it has a tint of sweetness in it and oh boy! Please order a plate of white rice to go with the gravy.

Nyonya Noodles S$15.00
The nyonya noodle here reminds me of local hokkien mee. They use yellow noodles cooked in rich prawn and pork stock with bean sprouts, kang kong and omelette with cucumber julienne.

Durian Chendol S$7.00
They serve chendol $5 and durian chendol. I opted for durian chendol of course. Their chendol comprises homemade red bean paste, palm sugar syrup from Indonesia, green pandan-flavoured jelly strips and the heaping spoonful of D-24 durian puree.

Apart from Chendol, they offer a selection of kueh kuehs such as Kueh Salat and Kueh Bingka Ubi. The dishes here are more of the hits than misses and I personally think the Sotong Keluak will be one of the must-order dishes when you visit The Blue Ginger.
