[SG EATS] The Coconut Club At Ann Siang Road– Famous For Its Nasi Lemak

When it comes to Nasi Lemak recommendation in Singapore, The Coconut Club is one of the top recommendations. The restaurant earned its reputation when they received an additional stamp of approval from PM Lee Hsien Loong when he chose to host Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in late 2016. They are also known as Michelin Bib Gourmand choice in 2018. Although everyone is raving about it, this is my first time visiting. We wanted to go to next door new opening but it was long queue. So, this is our plan B on a Sunday late lunch. The restaurant located at Ann Siang Road was full house when we stepped in. Noises from people chit chatting are all over the place. It was almost 2pm and everyone is still enjoying their Sunday lunch.
The highlight was the Nasi Lemak so we ordered the signatures and side dishes to try for 5 of us. The Nasi Lemak comes with Chicken, Otah and Fish set option. We had the Nasi Lemak Chicken Leg Set S$14.80++ , Chicken Breast Set S$14.80++ and Fish Set S$13.20++.

The set come with a serving of coconut rice, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, fried egg and sambal. What makes a good nasi lemak is all about the coconut flavoured rice and also the sambal. These two components are the key elements for this dish. Then the side ingredients used to complete the dish. It was a good plate of nasi lemak with fragrant coconut rice, crispy ikan bilis and the flavorful sambal that has the sweetness in it. And of course the marinated fried chicken reminds me of the Nasi Lemak in Malaysia. It has the familiar taste and texture with tender, juicy flavours in it. Even the chicken breasts were nicely executed.
As for the fish set, I personally this not bad but my friend said he will ordered this again if he is back here. The size of the fish here is of course bigger as compared to the hawker stalls and the well-executed. Fish lovers may enjoy this set.We also ordered some sides to share. First up is the Sambal Sotong S$14.00++. Cuttlefish stir-fry in spicy chilli paste. This is one of the true local delights to seafood lovers with the spicy chilli paste. It is a hearty dish to enjoy with the coconut rice. Then, we had Tauhu Tempe Sambal Lada S$9.00++ – Bean curd and fermented soybeans stir-fry in hot and spicy mixture. Tempe is a traditional Indonesian soy product that gives the nutty, meaty flavour to the sambal chilli paste. It is a good combination with the beancurd and paste.Lastly, Terung Assam Manis S$7.00++ – Fried eggplants topped with sweet and sour sauce. Well executed and the egg plants not that creamy or soft texture. It was just nice for your tastebuds.
Total bill was S$85.69 inclusive of 10% service charge and 7% GST. It was a good and pleasant dining experience here. The staffs were friendly and approachable. We loved the service here except for the noisy crowds. Oh well… food and services are good and we will surely be back next time.
