[SG EATS] Wai Hai Lou (外海楼) – Cantonese Restaurant in Chinatown Food Street
Wai Hai Lou is an authentic Cantonese restaurant is the hidden gem in the heart of Chinatown Food Street. The restaurant offers classic Cantonese dish such as freshly made Chee Cheong Fun and signature Pork Knuckle Noodles. We were here recently to try out some of their dishes.Speciality Noodles with Beef Brisket S$7.50A nice savoury bowl of beef noodles with affordable price tag. The noodles come in a good portion of nicely cooked noodles with chunks of beef brisket. The beef brisket was braised over 3-4 hours daily. That does explain the softness, tenderness and juiciness of the beef brisket.
Speciality Noodles with Pork Knuckles S$7.50My friend cannot take beef so she opts for their signature noodles. She enjoyed the pork knuckles that are cooked till soft and fork-tender.
Their chee cheong fun comes in few flavours and we decided to try Pork Liver Rice Roll S$7.00 and Char Siew Rice Roll S$5.50. They highlighted that the rice rolls are freshly made daily and created from scratch. It is very uncommon to see Pork Liver Rice Roll and this turned out pretty good. The pork liver tasted rich but not intensely so with the soy sauce complements the strong taste of the organ. As for the Char Siew Rice Roll, the char siew filled up the cheong fun. The decadent flavour contrasted well and we enjoyed it. The rice paper rolls are steamed till perfect. If you are nearby, you can check out the classic Cantonese cheong fun here. Other cheong fun flavours include fresh prawn, pork, sweet corn and egg. The price starts from S$4.50 onwards.
