[SG EATS] Johor Road Boon Kee Pork Porridge – Hainanese Style Congee at Jalan Veerasamy Road
Johor Road Boon Kee Pork Porridge is a stall located at Yi He Eating House coffee shop. The Hainanese porridge stall has a long way of history. Online reviews shared that they started from a pushcart along Johor Road before moving to the Veerasamy Road. It is also said to be one of the popular porridge stalls in Singapore.
So I decided to give it a try and headed over for breakfast. I arrived at 10am and the coffeeshop is almost full house but I managed to secure a table. I placed my order and was given a paper with number written. It is a number to notify when it appears on their LED panel, signalling that it is ready for pick up.
The simplified menu is on the signage.I decided to order Pork with Sliced Fish Porridge S$3.50. I also add on an egg with additional S$0.50. Order and payment to be made on the spot and the wait begins. The waiting time was approximately 30 minutes on a Saturday morning.
Porridge has always been a comfort food at all times especially on those rainy days. My porridge comes with ingredients like liver, pig stomach, you tiao, sliced pork and fish topped with spring onions, preserved tang chye and shallot oil. The add-on egg gives the smoothness and enhances the overall flavours. I like the thick and grainy porridge texture, which gives a homely feel.
The porridge price starts from S$3.00 onwards and you can opt for ingredients like chicken, sliced fish, cuttlefish, pork, century egg or others.
Or if you are adventurous enough, try the fried porridge from Old World Bakuteh at Hiap Hoe Eating House.
