[SG EATS] Tenshima – Tempura Omakase Restaurant in Millenia Walk Singapore – Worth to Try
Tenshima located in Millenia Walk is a fine dining tempura omakase concept restaurant. This few month-olds restaurant is helmed by Chef Takahiro Shima that has years of culinary experience in established Japanese restaurant. The 10-seat counter Tenshima has limited seating, so I made a reservation more than one month beforehand to celebrate my friend’s birthday on time.
Not many tempuras focused Omakase restaurant in Singapore and I decided to give this a try. It is a culinary treasure box that takes the inherent flavours of various ingredients and encloses them in a flaky, crispy interior. It is a Japanese dish consists of lightly battered and deep-fried ingredients, and a deep understanding of flavour profiles. The delicate balance between the crispy coating and succulent interior is an art form. Only a skilled tempura chef can master it.
We decided to go for Lunch Omakase priced at S$180++ per person that consists of 1 Appetizer, Palette Cleanser, 7 kinds of Tempura, 1 Premium Tempura, Tendon or Tencha and Dessert. Chef will showcase the ingredients that we are going to have before he starts preparing the meal for us.
Each table is beautifully setup for each diners with various types of seasoning ( curry salt, sea salt, tempura sauce) to pair with every course.
Our lunch started off with appertizer of the day.
Then, we start our 7 kinds of tempura journey including Ebi (Prawn) , Corn, Squid, Fish and Asparagus. All course is beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Clean, light, tender and juicy texture. The batter is light and not greasy at all. Impressive!
We had palette cleanser to cleanse our palate before moving on to our next course.
For premium tempura, we get the taste of tempura uni. I usually have my uni fresh, so tempura uni is quite intriguing. I thought deep-fried uni will lose its rich, creamy taste but it still offers delightful umani flavour.
Before moving on to dessert, we get to choose a tempura rice dish. Diners can choose between Tendon served with Miso Soup & Pickles or Tencha served with Pickles. I opted for Tendon while my friend tried their Tencha. Their tendon is dipped with chef’s signature sauce before serving.
Lastly, our dessert is a scoop of ice cream with deep-fried sweet potato. A sweet ending for our meal with natural sweetness from the sweet potato.
I left a message request when I made reservation. The staff is so sweet to prepare a small birthday cake for my friend without any additional charge. The service is impeccable, and they are very sweet in all the detailing. They even whatsapp me to remind me of the lunch appointment and a video showing the direction to the restaurant on the day of the reservation.
@hazeldiary_ Celebrated my friend’s birthday at Tenshima. Its our first Tempura Omakase experience and we were quite impressed. We dont see tempura the same anymore #sgfoodie #omakasesg #tenshima #tempura #omakaselunch ♬ 「恋愛サーキュレーション」歌ってみた – Renai Circulation
It was an intimate dining session. The restaurant limits to 10 persons each dining session. According to Tenshima website, they want to ensure that every customer can leisurely savour their meal while allowing for individual preferences and styles. My friend and I enjoyed the ambience and the food here. The batter is light and does not overpower the fresh ingredients. Simple and yet creative I would say. First time trying exquisite tempura omakase cuisine and it is a good one. We no longer see tempura dish the same again. Cosy ambience and we can interact with the chef while he prepares the course for us.
