[JB EATS] BONBON BAKERY CAFÉ AT TAMAN MOLEK
Bonbon Bakery Café located at Taman Molek, Johor Bahru is the latest café addition since 1 month ago. The café is located few steps away from Brew Orchestra. It shares the same name as the bakery in Australia but I am not sure if there are franchise café or not. I visited the place twice in a week. First time was with my dad to check out on their matcha yuzu tart on last Thursday and friends on the Saturday.
The café has a simple interior design with a minimalist instagram interior shoot for instagrammer seekers. There is a wooden table that serves up to 6 or more pax the moment you enter the café. The cakes are displayed at the counter for you to pick and ordering and payment to be made at the cashier counter. So, what does the café serves? The café offers coffee, tea, cold pressed juices, cakes and crepes.
Matcha Yuzu Tart – RM13.90
Their cakes are all made in-house and matcha yuzu tart is one in the list. The tart is actually made of almond flavours and the fillings are filled with matcha and yuzu. During my first visit, the matcha flavour was mild as compared with my second visit. One of my friend, Wilfred also visited the café before. He also shared that there is a difference in taste as compared with his first visit. I prefer the matcha yuzu tart taste during my second visit as the matcha taste is slightly rich in flavour. Overall this tart was not bad for our preferences.
Matcha Caramel Puff – RM13.90
It was quite disappointing for us as the matcha taste was overpowering. However, it was a nice surprise as we cut the puff into half and the caramel started to flow. Our advise is that make sure you eat from top to bottom (mixture of matcha and caramel) to balance off the bitterness of the matcha flavour.
Crepe Smoked Salmon- RM23.90
So far this is the only JB café that offers savoury and sweet crepes. I miss the one at Strangers 47 which I had it 2 years ago in KL. We had too much sweet stuff and decided to try on their savoury. The crepe does not taste like a crepe and it is overly cooked with eggs. One of us commented “ like having egg prata”. Nevertheless, the smoked salmons are good and it goes well with the crepe. I do find the price is a bit tad steep for this plate of dish.
The café does not charge 10% service charge or GST. Thus, this explains why customers are to order and pay at the counter. Will I be back again? Maybe yes maybe no but sure enough will be back to explore more on their cakes. Perhaps a bit of tweaking on their crepes will be even better.
After your cafe hop here, you can hope over to The Sugar Pantry for their Hokkaido Cheese Tart or matcha desserts.
