[SG EATS] PENANG CULTURE – THE FIRST PENANG-THEMED HALAL RESTAURANT IN SINGAPORE NEW MENU STARTING JUNE 2016

Penang Culture celebrates it’s 5th year anniversary with a new updated menu that showcases Penang specialities created by Penangite Head Chef Wong Thin Lipp. Before I go further, are you aware that Penang Culture is the first Penang-themed halal certified restaurant in Singapore? Hooray for our Muslim friends! Everyone gets to enjoy the Penang delicacies! I still remember my first visit was at their Woodlands’ outlet few years ago. Time flies!

So I was here at their outlet at Changi Airport Terminal 2 to check out the new menu. The new menu features Penang all time favourites such as Fried Kway Teow, Assam Laksa, Prawn Noodles and Chicken Wings with new recipes and taste for diners.

Penang Rojak S$5.95
The rojak serves with diced pineapples, cucumbers, turnip, you tiao and slice of cuttlefish tossed in Chef’s rojak sauce. It was a sweeter note dish for my preference.

Penang Curry Fish Balls S$4.95
The fish balls steeped in Penang chicken curry and potatoes cubes. The gravy was thick and creamy to go with a bowl of plain rice.

BBQ Salmon S$11.95
We usually have BBQ stingray but Penang Culture introduces the BBQ Salmon instead. Two slices grilled Norwegian salmon fillet topped off with Chef’s sweet, spicy paste. If you are a salmon lover, you can give this a try.

Salmon Assam Laksa S$11.95
To be frank, I am not a fan of Penang Assam Laksa because of its strong spicy-sour flavour. But this bowl of salmon assam laksa flavour was mild in taste. They added salmon meats and drizzling of hae kor instead of mackerel.

Penang Fire Wings S$6.55
My first impression was “Wow, they have Korean chicken wings here!” The chicken wings are deep-fried belachan-coated wings tossed in a sweet plum and Thai chilli sauce and peppered with silvers of chilli padi. Surprisingly, the spiciness level was mild and I enjoyed the crispy outer layer of the wings.

Premium Crab Meat & Salted Egg Fried Kway Teow S$15.95
The wok-fried flat rice noodles tossed with garlic, beansprouts, homemade sambal chilli and mashed salted egg, then topped with lavish helpings of prawns, squid, fishcake and cockles before adding meaty chunks of mud crab meat and salted egg. Although I prefer the fried kway teow with the pork lard version, this plate of goodness was not bad as well. The salted egg yolk enhance the taste of the dish and it was a nice try!

Premium Lobster & Scallop Noodles S$16.95
Instead of your usual prawn noodles, Penang Culture introduces the luxurious Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles. With S$16.95, you will get a bowl filled with scallops, slices of chicken, fish cake, kangkong, taupeh, a hard-boiled egg and a whole slipper lobster. The broth was slow-boiling for hours with a mixture of seafood ingredients and chicken bones. There is a taste of seafood sweetness in the broth.

As a whole, Penang Culture offers quite a variety of dishes to choose from. I am sure there are some of the dishes listed in the menu that enhance your interest to check it out. You will never tired of local savoury delights that are filling and yet satisfying. Also. The menu features a section that provides option for customers looking for dishes that are below 500 calories. The dishes listed in here have been approved by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) as part of their Healthier Dining Programme.
