[SG EATS] HERITAGE PENANG BUFFET AT PRINCESS TERRACE| COPTHORNE KING’S HOTEL
Speaking of buffets in Singapore, Princess Terrace at Copthorne King’s Hotel has been serving Penang food buffet since year 1970s. They are known with their specialty Penang food varieties which regular customers will come back for more. The buffet here preserve the rich Penang food culture and heritage which reminisce the foods that we had in Penang with a slight twist of taste to suit the local taste here.
Unlike the buffet spread from other places that serve international cuisines, Princess Terrace serves comfort traditional favourites such as prawn noodles, Penang laksa, porridge and home-cooked style dishes. Let me walk you through some of the dishes that I explored during the session.
LIVE STATION
There is live station where chefs prepare popiah and Penang specialties upon request. Diners can see chef live in action preparing the Penang assam laksa, duck vermicelli, prawn mee and many others. Each individual dishes cooked with flavourful broth which gives a thumbs up for the taste. The duck vermicelli gave me the deep impression especially the broth was so comforting and good.
COOKED STATION
There is quite a range of cooked food including Penang char kway tiao, wok-fried porridge, prawns, meats and even chee cheong fun. Every individual dishes has its own uniqueness and too bad I didn’t manage to try all of them.
But I had two bowls of the heart warming porridge. It was delish and I enjoyed the sweetness taste in it.
And of course there are salad bar to kick start your feast.
DESSERT STATION
If only I have bigger stomach space for desserts, I would try everything! They have the live station for ban chang kueh (peanut pancake) which is made fresh and crispy on the spot. And next to it is the teh halia and teh tarik which is superb shiok to have it.
And what attracts my attention is the selection of bite-sized kueh nicely displayed on the table. There are kueh lapis, kueh dadah roll with grated coconuts, kueh bengkah (baked tapioca cake) and many more. Each individual kueh is made in-house by the pastry chef. I am truly impressed with their kueh.
And this is my first time trying Apom bokwa with caramelized banana sauce. My friend told me that this is one of the Peranakan signature dessert. It was quite sweet after adding the sauce onto the pancake.
Furthermore, there is also a station where you can DIY your chendol and ice kacang. There is a shave ice maker and ingredients at one corner where diners get to decorate their own customized desserts.
Overall, the buffet here serves wide range of Penang cuisines where you seldom find in other buffet spread. The buffet-style here is more towards local cuisine rather than international. I also noticed that the staffs here are mostly elderly who has been with the hotel for many years. They are happy working in this environment and stay cheerful attending to customers too. I love the spirits here and feeling comfort having meal here with them. If you are looking for all rounded Penang cuisine, I think this would be a good place to check it out.
