[SG EATS] LE BINCHOTAN – THE FRENCH-JAPANESE TAPAS BAR AT HIDDEN ALLEYWAY | GEMMILL LANE
Le Binchotan located at the hidden back alleyway of Gemmill Lane is the new F&B venture founded by Jessica Lim, Kenichi Mori, Kenji Tanaka and Takahiro Inoue. This French-Japanese tapas bar is your next place to enjoy a gastronomic experience when you are planning for a chillout place after work around the area.
What attracts me was the interior layout that is artfully designed. Timber rods form a rib-like topography that creates intimacy in the space. The long bar has the capacity seats for 20 people and even private room for cosy intimate session for a group gathering.
And if you are wondering, who is the head chef at Le Binchotan? Jeremmy Chiam, a young lad is leading the team in action. He spent 8 years honing his skills at some of Singapore’s best restaurants ( Iggy , Table at 7 , Caffe B etc) is truly passionate on French and Japanese inspired flavours has previously worked side by side with the acclaimed Japanese Chef Hiroki Yoshitake (owner of one-star Michelin restaurant Sola in Paris).
So, what did we try during our session with Le Binchotan?
Clams S$19.00
The clams are imported from New Zealand and served with sake content and fungi. The sake takes away the gaminess of the clams as the alcohol evaporates and enhances the flavours of the seafood.
Madai S$25.00
Smoked sea bream with eggplant, radish and sherry vinegrette for cold dish option.
Shishito S$9.00
Sweet Japanese pepper served with furikake and sea salt.
Foie Gras S$21.00++
Le Binchotan serves the shaved Foie Gras with daikon, daishi Gelée, and shitake which was not appealing in terms of presentation. But the taste of the dish was awesome. Every ingredient is well-balanced in the portion. It was the taste of saltiness from the daishi stock, the crisp texture of the shaved foie gras and the taste of shitake mushroom.
Iberico Pork Jowl S$35.00
It was the crowd pleaser dish that night. The sous-vide pork with katsu curry, green apple and Japanese kabocha ‘charcoal’ pumpkin.
Wagyu Striploin S$15.00
Tender and juicy wagyu striploin that I wish I can have more than one bite.
Fungi in Akita Komachi Rice in Truffle Jus & Garlic Chips S$29.00
Japanese-style risotto prepared using truffle jus and garlic chips.
Coconut S$15.00++
Coconut-flavoured panna cotta sprinkled with matcha snow and dehydrated raspberries. It’s like a garden lush with spring flowers. Surprisingly the matcha powder does not overpower the taste of the coconut. It was just perfect combination with mild-flavour taste.
And for those who are working nearby, you can also check out their seasonal lunch menu priced at S$38.00 ( 3 – course) and S$48.00 ( 4- course).
And of course, if you are looking for a place to chill and some drinks with your dates, Le Binchotan has the romantic atmosphere. Nice and affordable cocktails available in the list. The names of the cocktails are pretty interesting such as The Flower and the Bowtie, Sake My Cucumber and many more.
Overall, there are hit and misses on the food. But I do recommend their desserts. It was indeed impressive and worth trying desserts. And of course their signature dishes to pair with a glass of cocktails after work would be good.
