[PENANG EATS] LIYAQAT ALI NASI KANDAR BERATUR

Nasi Kandar is one of the signature Malaysian dish and is also a Penang staple. Nasi Kandar is quite similar as Chinese chai peng but this is a plate of steamed rice with variety of curry-based meat dishes and vegetables. I was in Penang sometime back and decided to check out one of the famous Nasi Kandar Beratur around 10pm at night.  Liyaqat Ali Nasi Kandar only opens at 10pm and Nasi Kandar Beratur (Queue-up Nasi Kandar) is always one of the choices for locals’ supper. The shop has been operating since year 1943 and pretty long history I would say. Some who been out clubbing late will be seen here in middle of the night having their supper. We were there by 9.50pm and the queue was formed even before the stall is opened. So, we joined the queue and waited for about 20 minutes to get out serving.
As we queue along, we noticed that some of them are locals from different state of Malaysia and even saw angmoh queuing out to try too. So, basically we need to queue and choose from the display counter where all the dishes are showcased in a row.
So, they have the omelette, thick curry gravy with squids/ sotong, chicken meat, beef, vegetables and many more.Just look at the row of dishes available in the picture. We took our pick and the staff just pours the thick gravy on top of all the dishes before handing it over to us. Payment is made upon ordering.
So, our total bill was RM15.00++ for a plate of steamed rich with the choice of dishes. Indeed a nice and delicious plate of goodness especially the flavourful of thick curry sauce. The curry sotong was good but the fried chicken is a bit tad dry though. I wouldn’t mind coming back to have this for super. It has the nostalgic taste I would say.
If you are driving, please note that the parking can be quite challenging. It is located in front of the one way heavy traffic road. Thus, be sure you secure your parking at the right place before enjoying your supper.
