[SG EATS] First Street Teochew Fish Soup (第一街潮州鱼汤) At Upper Serangoon Road – Worth the Queue?
First Street Teochew Fish Soup located at Upper Serangoon Road is known as one of the best fish soup in Singapore. Based on online reviews, it is founded by Mr William Lim back in the 80s, where he started the business at First Centre before relocation here in Upper Serangoon Road. They are featured in various media platform and currently manage by father and two sons.My friend arrived around 12.55pm and it is already in long queue and slow like snail. We queued patiently for approximately 40-50 minutes before we finally got our food on the table. Please be prepared to queue if you want to try out this place or try to avoid odd timings to avoid the long queue. There are quite a selection of fish soups including batang (mackerel), promfret and red garoupa. You can opt for mixed seafood soups and a choice to add rice, porridge or mee sua to go with. The price starts from S$6.00 onwards with 3 different sizes to order (S,M, L).
I ordered the Batang (Mackerel) fish soup S$6.00 with add on S$0.50 for the minced pork without rice whereas another friend of mine ordered the same bowl but with a bowl of rice. The bowl comes with fresh slices of batang fish, minced pork, salted vegetables, fried shallots and slices of ginger. This savoury soup comes in clear flavour and distinctive saltiness from the salted vegetables. As for the fish slices, it was fresh and no fishy aftertaste. My friend suggested adding in the minced pork for extra flavour and indeed it is a wise choice.Another friend ordered Batang (Mackerel) fish soup S$6.00 with add-on S$1.50 of squid. This is definitely a comforting bowl and something that I will go for on rainy days and anytime. I usually will choose fried slice fish soup but this is good. If only the queuing time can be shorter, I will surely patronize the stall often.
