[SG EATS] Explore Joo Chiat Food Places Apart From The Instagram-Worthy Colourful Peranakan Shophouses

Joo Chiat is well-known for its colourful heritage shophouses that attract tourists to come here for instagram-worthy photos. It is also one of the favourite neighbourhoods with past heritage stories in Singapore. But I am here to explore the food places that are well-received by the locals since travelling out of Singapore is not possible for now. My friends and I went for a food trail recently and here are food places you can add in your list when you are here. I also went back to try other food places in separate days.

1. Mr and Mrs Mohgan’s Super Crispy Prata
Tin Yeang Restaurant-Mr and mrs mohgan
Mr and Mrs Mohgan’s Super Crispy Prata is a go to breakfast place for most locals. As you can see from most online reviews, it is said to be the best prata in Singapore although I disagree that. We waited for an hour for the prata to be served due to the overwhelming demands on a Sunday morning. The prata is light and crisp but my friends and i thought that the curry is bland and watery. I would choose Enaq over this. Nevertheless, it is a good experience and if you are willing to wait to try this local breakfast staple, go ahead. The prata is indeed pretty good but not worth to queue for not more than 20 minutes though. But people still queued patiently without complain. So it is up to you to try and decide.

2. Da Dong Prawn Noodles
Da Dong Prawn Noodles At Joo Chiat

Unlike your usual prawn noodles soup, Da Dong Prawn Noodles’s broth is not the rich prawny version. This stall is operated by young hawkerpreneur and the price per bowl is not cheap. They are known for it’s Big Prawn Noodle priced at S$15.00. And of course, you can opt for the normal prawn size noodle at lower price. Also, check out their Pork Rib Prawn Noodle as well.

For the dish, you can opt for soup or dry version and either egg noodles or rice vermicelli. The ordering and waiting time will take approximately 20-30 minutes depending on the group. I would recommend to try their prawn noodles here and all because of the fresh ingredients used and also the light, flavourful and sweet broth. But no refill of soup though.

3. Jia Yuen Eating House – Creamy Salted Egg Yolk Rice
Jia Yuen Eating House located at 15 Crane Road is a quiet coffeeshop around Joo Chiat vicinity area. The eatery shop is not noticeable as it is nestled among a row of shophouses and opposite residential housing. We ordered their signature Creamy Salted Egg Yolk Rice S$8.00 and Cereal Chicken Rice S$8.00. Reviews shared that their creamy salted egg yolk is a must-order dish here and true enough. We loved it. Deep-fried chicken coated with creamy thick salted egg yolk sauce. And fragrant the curry leaves smell and spiciness from the chillies. Shiok! But if the flour can be less thicker, it will be good. Nevertheless, this is still a good plate of creamy salted egg yolk rice with the beautiful goey egg. Read about my full experience here.

4. 233 Banh Mi
233 Banh Mi previously occupied 233 Joo Chiat Road offering wide range of Vietnamese cuisine has now specialised in selling banh mi (Vietnamese Bread) only. The owner, Lily was there at the cashier counter taking orders and payment when we visited the eatery shop for a quick lunch. The eatery shop space is limited and they only have one row of seating spot, which can only fit 2 pax at one time. Thus, most of the customers will opt for takeaway options. Read more here .
